Sarracenia ‘Dave’ is an exciting new carnivorous pitcher plant cultivar, available for the first time exclusively from Hampshire Carnivorous Plants.

This striking Sarracenia produces beautifully shaped upright pitchers with exceptional creamy-white colour, dramatic deep-red veining and contrasting red-edged hoods. As the pitchers mature, the colour and intricate veining become even more impressive, creating a spectacular plant that really stands out in a carnivorous plant collection.

Sarracenia ‘Dave’ is named after my long-time friend and colleague, Dave Tite, making this a particularly special introduction to our collection.

It is a strong-growing Sarracenia and, given plenty of sunlight, develops fantastic colour throughout the growing season.

Sarracenia ‘Dave’ Growing Guide

Light

Grow Sarracenia ‘Dave’ in full sun for the best growth and colour. Strong natural sunlight encourages sturdy pitchers, creamy-white colour and intense red veining. Avoid growing Sarracenia in a dark position indoors.

Watering

During the growing season, stand the pot in approximately 2–3 cm of rainwater and keep the compost consistently wet.

Rainwater is always recommended. Avoid hard tap water wherever possible, as the dissolved minerals can build up in the compost and cause problems over time.

Never allow a Sarracenia to completely dry out during active growth.

Best Compost for Sarracenia ‘Dave’

For the best results we recommend our COM1 Carnivorous Plant Compost.

COM1 is the compost we use for growing our Sarracenia here at Hampshire Carnivorous Plants and is our recommended mix for Sarracenia ‘Dave’. It provides the acidic, low-nutrient growing conditions that carnivorous plants require.

Never use ordinary multipurpose compost, John Innes compost or fertilised potting compost, as these contain nutrients that can damage or kill carnivorous plants.

Repotting

The best time to repot Sarracenia ‘Dave’ is during winter or early spring, before vigorous new growth begins.

Choose a suitable plastic pot with drainage holes and repot using fresh COM1 Carnivorous Plant Compost.

Winter Dormancy

Sarracenia ‘Dave’ is a temperate carnivorous plant and requires a cool winter dormancy.

During winter, growth will naturally slow and older pitchers may turn brown and die back. This is completely normal. Keep the plant cool and damp throughout its dormant period.

It is ideal for growing in a sunny unheated greenhouse and can also be grown outdoors in a suitable sunny, sheltered position.

Spring Care

In late winter or early spring, remove old dead pitchers to make room for the new season’s growth. Fresh pitchers will begin emerging as temperatures and light levels increase.
