Drosera aliciae – Alice Sundew

Drosera aliciae is an attractive and easy-to-grow sundew native to South Africa. It forms a compact rosette of spoon-shaped leaves covered with glistening red tentacles. Each tentacle produces a sticky drop of mucilage that attracts, traps and digests small insects.

In good light, the plant develops beautiful red colouration, while plants grown in lower light tend to remain greener. Mature plants produce tall flower stems carrying numerous small pink flowers.

An excellent choice for beginners and a very rewarding sundew to grow.

Growing Guide

Position:
Grow in a bright, sunny position. A sunny windowsill, conservatory or heated greenhouse is ideal. Good light encourages strong growth and the best red colouration.

Watering:
Always use rainwater, distilled water or reverse-osmosis water. Do not use normal tap water in hard-water areas.

Stand the pot in approximately 1–2 cm of water during active growth. Never allow the compost to dry out completely.

Compost:
Use a nutrient-poor carnivorous plant compost, our com 1 is ideal or a mix is sphagnum peat with perlite or sand. Never use ordinary multipurpose compost or add fertiliser.

Temperature:
Drosera aliciae prefers warm conditions and is not frost hardy. Ideally keep above approximately 10°C during winter. It can continue growing throughout the year when kept warm and given sufficient light.

Feeding:
No fertiliser is required. The plant will catch small flies and other insects for itself.

Repotting:
Repot when the plant becomes crowded or the compost begins to deteriorate, preferably during spring.
