January 2024 Blog Happy New Year

This is our first blog for 2024 so we would like to wish you all a happy new year !

we have our flower show and open weekends now up on the website under the EVENTS tab on the home page and for those of you who would like to visit the nursery to pick up plants or compost from the nursery over the next few weeks just send us an email sales@hantsflytrap.com or call 07703258296 to arrange a visit, we are open most sundays to wednesdays from 9am to 1.00pm

We are busy here on the nursery getting as many orders out to you as quickly as possible , most will be out next week

New plant Additions

we will be adding plants to the website again over the next few weeks , including some new items and one off plants , below are a few on the site now, plant you see is the plant you get ready potted

Over wintering temperate plants

if you are growing Dionaea, Sarracenia or temperate Drosera these plants really do need a good cold period over winter for best results,so if you are growing these plants indoors they are best moved out to a cold frame , unheated greenhouse or porch around the begining of November,  if left indoors they will not die back and rest properly, we have had a few calls this year from customers regarding this , also it has been fairly mild this year and some of our plants in the unheated greenhouse and out in the bog garden still have green leaves and look suprisingly good for the time of year , dont worry this is normal and happens some times , just make sure you keep the plants just damp rather than wet and cut off any dead leaves

Drosera

remember, many temperate Drosera loose virtually all their foliage over winter, especially species such as D madagasgariensis and all the D binata forms keep them just damp , new growth starts to push through again in the spring, below left D madagasgariensis, centre Drosera rotundifolia typical winter resting bud , right Sarracenia , this dead foliage will be cut back over the next few days to make way for new growth
